Service Learning in February: Communication

What We Achieved in January

Throughout January, we collected new and gently used clothing, new undergarments, and full-size toiletries for Catie’s Closet. Catie’s Closet works to improve school attendance for children in need, by providing them with “an in-school resource of clothing and toiletries so kids can succeed in school and in life. Today, Catie’s Closets can be found in 37 schools in MA & NH.”

Together, we collected 344.52 lbs of clothing, plus toiletries! We can hardly believe it. Thank you to everyone who donated to this wonderful cause!

February’s Cause: Valentines for Troops with A Million Thanks

February’s Goal: Brighten the spirits of stationed US soldiers by writing them heartfelt Valentines cards

Sometimes, all it takes to bring somebody comfort is the knowledge that you’re thinking of them. Communication is key to keeping communities connected, regardless of how far apart people may be. By taking just a few minutes of our time, we are able to let men and women who are far away from home, family, and friends know that we’re grateful for their service. Reaching out to our troops with words of kindness and gratitude lets them know they’re not alone or forgotten: It’s a simple gesture that has a huge impact on others.

Each year, we try to look within our own school community connections to help us find a troop to send our Valentines to. This year, we are grateful for the many parents who stepped forward with their connections. One such parent is the local contact for A Million Thanks, the organization we have decided to send our Valentines through.

Call to Action

This month, children will be creating Valentines in class. We are happy to accept Valentines that the students make at home, as well. All Valentines are due by Wednesday, February 7th.
