What We Achieved in April
April 22nd marked Earth Day, and since we’re pretty big fans of our planet at 2nd Nature Academy, we dedicated our month to giving back to it… creatively! The elementary and middle school classes were tasked with designing their own creative projects to achieve this goal. Middle school produced Earth Day PSA videos, the upper elementary built their very own bird nesting balls out of naturally dyed wool, the lower elementary started worm composting, and the interim-kindergarten and kindergarten are currently undergoing a contest to see which class can produce the least amount of snack waste. Great job to all of the classes!
May’s Cause: Heifer International
May’s Theme: Critical Thinking
May’s Goal: Conduct a hot dog sale (“Hotdogs for Heifer”) to raise funds for the sponsorship of livestock for impoverished, rural families around the world
By this point in the year, we have learned that doing good can be hard work! A little brain power and elbow grease can yield amazing results. To run a successful enterprise, whether it be a business, non-profit, or event, it takes a lot of critical thinking. The students engage in all aspects of running such an event, when they come together to plan, budget and purchase the supplies for, and host a hot dog sale, all with the goal to make a profit that they can then donate. After the students tally their funds from the hot dog sale, they use that money to select livestock to sponsor for impoverished, rural families around the world, to help them better their quality life and contribute back to their own local communities.
Heifer International is a non-profit organization with the mission “to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.”
Call to Action
Help us support Heifer International by joining us later in the month for our hot dog sale! (Date TBD; Cash only)
The Hotdogs for Heifer sale has been a student favorite for years. Our first one was held in 2012… you might see some (younger) familiar faces in this one!
