A Healthy Education During COVID-19

Program

2nd Nature Academy is situated on a 39 acre campus in South Nashua, NH/Dunstable, MA and abuts roughly 700 acres of pristine conserved and protected land. 2nd Nature Academy classes regularly utilize this outdoor space for inquiry and exploration, Project Based Learning experiences, Place-based Education opportunities, and environmental science activities, as well as other authentic, hands-on, learning practices. Our new, healthy, high-performance school building boasts spacious, well appointed classrooms with large windows that provide ample natural daylight and natural air flow. Small class sizes, flexible seating options, and creative classroom arrangements enhance the learning experience and provide for social distancing while indoors.

Current State of NH and public health guidelines strongly encourage outdoor time whenever possible. With abundant open air classroom spaces, multiple fields, expansive forests, an educational animal barn, school vegetable gardens, freshwater ponds, glacial eskers, rolling hills, and seasonal wetlands and bogs, there is adequate space for all classes to participate in meaningful outdoor educational experiences throughout the day.

2020-2021 School Year

We feel that the social, emotional, and physical development of children is paramount. Essential skills such as peer conflict resolution, problem solving, collaboration, communication, empathy, creativity, mindfulness, and critical thinking are best developed through in-person interactions. 2nd Nature Academy therefore intends to hold in-person, on-campus classes this fall. In the event of a government shut-down of schools due to a significant increase of cases of Covid-19 in the area, we will revert to distance learning.

Admissions

We are currently accepting new student applications.

Health & Safety

2nd Nature Academy is keeping up with the latest health and safety recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The American Academy of Pediatrics COVID-19 Planning Considerations: Guidance for School Re-entry as well as New Hampshire Department of Education Grades K–12 Back-to-School Guidance.

Some of the policies we are currently following in summer camp and child care and will continue to follow include:

  • enhanced cleaning and disinfecting using EPA-approved cleaners and sanitizers
  • more frequent handwashing for children and adults
  • mask use for staff and older students indoors, as well as outdoors whenever social distancing is not possible
  • maintaining small cohorts of students
  • increased use of outdoor spaces in both frequency and duration, including outdoor classrooms
  • limiting access to campus buildings to personnel and students
  • refraining from mixing groups of students throughout the day
  • use of flexible seating arrangements to maintain social distancing while in classrooms
  • reconfigured drop-off and pick-up procedures

Well-Child Campus

All students will be screened daily upon arrival. Temperatures will be taken and a health survey will be conducted. Any individual with a fever, cold symptoms, or other symptoms associated with COVID-19 will be required to stay home for 72-hours after fever/symptom-free without medication.

Revised Extended Day Hours

We have temporarily revised our hours for before and after school to 7:00-8:30 am and 3:30-5:00 pm. This allows for proper staffing, as well as adequate time for enhanced cleaning and disinfecting.
